About

“An original and artistic voice was evident from the outset…a true romantic sensibility”

Shaun Yong is a Zurich-based organist, pianist, and harpsichordist.

Currently pursuing his Master's degree in organ at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, Shaun’s teachers include Tobias Willi (Principal) and Andreas Jost (Improvisation). He has given concerts in the annual Zürcher Orgelspaziergang and the Musikfest Zürich West. On the harpsichord, Shaun studies with Valeria Jegorova, and has played a number of Baroque chamber music concerts. Other courses he has participated in include orchestral and choral conducting, as well as voice with Dorothee Labusch.

In March 2019 Shaun was appointed Choirmaster and Organist at St Andrew’s Church, Zurich. There, he directs the music at Zurich’s only Anglican church. He plays the services and conducts the choir, focusing mainly on the rich repertoire of the Anglican choral tradition.

Prior to his move to the Continent, Shaun earned the Bachelor of Music degree with honours from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London. There, he studied the piano under the supervision of Mikhail Kazakevich and organ under Stephen Disley and Daniel Moult. He was a finalist in the conservatoire's Chopin prize. He performed in venues around the UK, including at the Royal Greenwich International Early Music Festival.

St Andrew's Zurich

Come and sing with the Choir of St Andrew's Zurich!

The choir of St Andrew's Zurich is a robed, SATB, volunteer choir. We sing the 10.30am Eucharist on Sundays from September to June, drawing from the rich repertoire of the Anglican choral tradition that spans from 500 years ago to the present day. We also sing on occasion the services of Matins and Evensong, which are the distinctive Anglican offices beloved throughout the world.

Choir practices are on Thursdays from 6.30 to 8.30pm during the choir season, and we meet before the 10.30am Sunday Eucharist for a short rehearsal. St Andrew's Church is located at Promenadengasse 9, 8001 Zürich, a stone's throw from Kunsthaus, Bellevue or Stadelhofen station.

We are currently recruiting in all parts, especially altos and tenors this season. We welcome anyone who loves to sing - singing as a group is such a good way to engage the body, mind, and soul. Some choral experience and basic rudiments in music reading is welcome but not entirely necessary. We rehearse in English. Please contact me for more information: [email protected]

Highlights of the Michaelmas 2019 term:
In this season beginning September 2019 the choir of St Andrew's will be singing in some of the historic churches in Zurich: the Grossmünster, Predigerkirche, and Augustinerkirche. Some of the music we'll be singing at our regular Sunday Eucharist include that from Tallis, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Jonathan Dove. Other highlights include a trip to St Gallen in December as well as a visit to St Andrew's by the Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe. In 2020 St Andrew's will host the Swiss Archdeaconry Choir Festival, a weekend of rehearsals and services by the combined choirs of Anglican churches across Switzerland led by a renowned conductor from the UK.  First practice of the next choir season: Thursday 29 August 2019, 6.30-8.30pm

Teaching

Learn to play the organ and piano

I am passionate about teaching because I've been privileged to have had some of the best teachers any young musician could have asked for: from Tedd Joselson and Mikhail Kazakevich for piano, to Daniel Moult, Stephen Disley, and Tobias Willi on the organ.

In each their own way, they inspired me with their own musical achievements, they nurtured every effort and enthusiasm, they encouraged exploration and discovery without fear of mistakes and risk-taking, they never hurried progress, they instilled the highest sense of artistic integrity and quality, and they made sure that behind every note was a personal voice.

It is from these overarching principles that I form my own approach to teaching. Allow me to help you on your journey to musical mastery - please get in touch via the form below!
